Let me preface this piece before people read the headline and respond thinking I’m saying that Black and other people of color (POC) should always lead diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) departments or initiatives. I’m not — especially if it’s solely for the sake of tokenism, but representation matter and so does cultural competency when dealing with American corporation’s lack of diversity in work, marketing, media and creative projects.
Disney recently announced the leaders of their “dual diversity councils” (CBR.com) and doesn’t this picture scream diversity?
Hey, did your stimulus check come today? Mine did — hooray! I don’t know about you, but I really needed this financial boost.
To my conservative sisters and mighty MAGA men who needed the money just a much as I did — please say a special, “thank you, sis” to Black women and Democrats, because they are really the ones who helped us out. You’re welcome!
House Republicans and 49 Republican Senators voted against the stimulus.
All jokes aside, if you’re having some financial issues or one of the 12 million people who filed for unemployment (and probably still waiting)…

Dr. Greg Carr said it best on Roland Martin Unfiltered — “we need the momentum of memory”.
It took Derek Chauvin 8 minutes and 46 seconds to nonchalantly murder George Floyd by pressing his knee to his neck and back in public. Derek Chauvin is on trial right now. The officer that pepper sprayed Army Lt. Caron Nazario in December, 2020 was only fired because the video just went viral in 2021.
Millions marched after George Floyd’s death, but now that things are returning to normal — we can’t be complacent. …
In light of UNC’s tenure scandal, I needed to highlight the lack of diversity in college and university boards. UNC’s initial denial of Nikole Hannah-Jones’ well deserved tenure put a spotlight on how nonprofits, universities and their boards operate. This is a serious, deep rooted issue that’s created highly toxic work and academic environments for Black and brown professors, professionals and scholars across the country.
These are the 4 words that capture my state of mind, mental capacity and financial status at the moment.
I can count on one hand how many nights I’ve had a good night’s sleep. I’ve spent most of 2020 literally by myself — separated and isolated from family and friends. I’m single with zero prospects and why would I even attempt to bring someone into my life in limbo?
I’m laid off, looking for jobs and contracts. Unemployment doesn’t answer calls or emails. …
I hear you and trust and know that I've been there. That's why I'm a writer and consultant now...
After you finish moping - because we all need a mental health/self-care day.
Do a skills/asset audit - what are all the great words that describe you and wonderful things you do?
Then, look in the mirror tell yourself you deserve better, give yourself some love, grace. Clean and moisturize your face, make an exit plan starting with updating that resume...
You may have to take a pay cut or compromise on some compensation perks, but nothing is worth our sanity and peace of mind.
God bless you and I hope you find the strength to transition to a place where you're appreciated, honored and fairly compensated.
I want to be crystal clear — this is not a sneer or implication that the beautiful and brilliant, Pulitzer prize winning Kendrick Lamar ever uttered these words to or for Black women. However, I’m using his lyrics to highlight that everyone in the world has gotten way too comfortable telling Black women:
Shut up/Sit down/Be humble/Be grateful/Don’t complain/Stop fighting/You care too much/ You look like you don’t care/Say something/Do something/ Fix it/Fix me/Fix my life/You think you’re smart/You expect too much/Everything doesn’t need a response/Stop looking at me like that/Stop being strong/Stop being smart/Stop being discerning/Stop pretending you have…
Summer is here and if you’re like me you’re looking for ways to lose some pandemic pounds. I’m ok with my thickness, but the quarantine made things ridiculous and now I can no longer hide.
It also doesn’t help that it’s Olympic season and all these beautiful athletes have me reminiscing and missing my childhood running and gymnastic days… Now my reality and saving grace are high waisted everything from mom jeans to leggings to reign in my Corona roundness. Yet, at the end of the day, I need a long-term solution.
Dieting — has never worked for me, only…
Congratulations to Nikole Hannah-Jones for her new position as the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Reporting at Howard University!
Howard University is one of the top universities in America and a top historically Black college. It represents academic excellence, rigor, and integrity.
Nikole’s transition from UNC to Howard is bittersweet as a proud UNC alumnus, but it’s like a homecoming in that she (like me) always regretted not attending Howard for undergrad.
UNC’s loss is indeed Howard and all HBCU’s gain. It also serves as a cautionary tale and precedent that Black talent will no longer fight to “[prove…
